Howie-in-the-Hills, FL - The men's golf team at Florida Atlantic University finished it's opening round Friday afternoon in fourth place at the Mission Inn Collegiate Classic, in Howie-in-the-Hills, FL. FAU's Torstein Nevestad, a freshman from Oslo, Norway, is atop the leader board after shooting a two-under first-round score of 69. As a team, the Owls are just two strokes back of leader Old Dominion University.
With two days left the Owls have their sights on a first place finish. FAU finished the day with a team score of 290 while Gardner-Webb and Bethune-Cookman are a single stroke ahead, 289, tied for second place. Winthrop is bunched with the leaders as well, coming in a shot behind FAU, 291. The next closest team is Charleston Southern, six strokes back at 297.
Three other Owls finished the first-round inside of the top-30. Joel Gibbons and Ben Gardner (T16) shot two-over 73, while Anibal Ochoa (T28) started the tournament with a 75. In all, the tournament has 85 participants and 17 teams.
Michael Himebaugh concluded the Owls' opening round by shooting an 82.
FAU continues play on Saturday, and concludes the tournament Sunday.
