HOUSTON, Texas – After recording a one-over 285 in the final round of Houston Baptist University’s Huskies Invitational, the Florida Atlantic University men’s golf team finished in fifth place, tallying 863 strokes after three rounds of play.
The Owls were tied for fifth after the second round with the Stephen F. Austin State. All five players for FAU improved their finishes after the third round and the team topped SFA, who took the sixth-place finish.
Connor O’Rourke finished as FAU’s leading scorer for the tournament. O’Rourke finished the second round tied for 21st, shooting a two-over 73. The freshman advanced to a 12th-place tie carding three-under 68 in the third round.
Alex Gates tied for 19th overall carding rounds of 71, 73 and 72. The senior recorded even par on 37 holes throughout the tournament. Richard Donegan, previously tied at 30th, tallied 72 strokes in the final round for a total of 218, good for a 24th-place tie.
Derron Peyton tied for 38th after the second round, but his third-round score of two-over 73 allowed the sophomore to finish tied for 29th. Pablo Gerboles-Parrilla rounded out FAU’s team, shooting 74 for a tournament total of 224 strokes. The junior originally recorded a 58th-place finish in the first round and improved his final finish to 39th.
UALR took the win for the Huskies Invitational with an eight-under 844. The Owls missed fourth-place by just four strokes. FAU will continue its fall schedule in Fort Myers on Oct. 27-28 at the Cobra-Puma Invitational, hosted by Xavier University. The team finished the 2012 Cobra-Puma Invitational in fifth place with Richard Donegan placing fourth.
