FORT MYERS, FL - Freshman Richard Donegan's fourth-place finish led the men's golf squad to fifth amongst the 15 teams participating in the Cobra-PUMA Invitational.
Donegan shot a final round 67, good enough for the second best round for all individuals on Monday at 5-under-par. His three-day total of 208 (8-under-par) put him eight strokes behind the winner.
Fellow first-year player Derron Peyton capped off his top-20 finish with a final day even-par 72, and an even-par overall total of 216. He tied for 19th.
Frank Berzanskis and Airik Medinis finished a shot apart, at 221 (+5) and 222 (+6), respectively. Berzanskis shot a 75 Monday and tied for 32nd overall. Medinis finished his first tournament as an Owl with a 1-over-par 73 for a 35th place tie.
FGCU led wire-to-wire and won by 19 strokes over runner-up Penn State (837-856). Bethune-Cookman was a stroke behind Penn State, followed by Wofford at 861, and then the Owls with a 1-over-par 865. The top individual also came from FGCU, Edward Figueroa, who fired a last-day 8-under-par 64 to finish with a stroke total of 200. His 16-under-par total was five ahead of the first day leader, Nathan Kerns from Marshall, as well as Bethune-Cookman's Ryan Fricker.
The squad has three weeks before their next tournament, the HBU Men's Intercollegiate, beginning on Monday, October 22. The two-day event takes place at the Quail Valley El Dorado Golf Club in Missouri City, Texas.
