Sophomore Justin Thompson carded a round of 74 on Tuesday to pace FAU's attack

The Florida Atlantic University men’s golf team looks to make up some ground after being in ninth place heading into Wednesday’s final 18 holes of the Sun Belt Conference Championships in Muscle Shoals, Ala.

The Owls have compiled a 608 team score over the first two days on the 7,171-yard, par-72 Robert Trent Jones Trail’s the Shoals golf course. FAU improved its score by two strokes during Tuesday’s second round and stands four strokes from eighth place.

Sophomore Justin Thompson paced the Owls on Tuesday with a two-over-par 74 round, rebounding from a disappointing 82 first-round score. The West Palm Beach native had an even par score over the last nine holes during Tuesday’s round, ending the day with a birdie on the par 3 18th hole. He had three birdies during the afternoon.

Senior Ben Silverman made a team-high four birdies to also shoot a 74 on Tuesday. The Thornhill, Ontario native stands in a tie for 23rd place individually after carding a four-over-par 76 round during Monday’s opening round.

Junior Kelly McHugh continued the Owls’ consistent play on Tuesday with a three-over-par 75. The Lakeland native had a subpar round going late in his round for the second straight day. He stood at one-under-par after back-to-back birdies on the ninth and 10th holes, and held that score until the 14th hole. McHugh proceeded to lose four strokes over the final five holes and now stands in a tie for 37th place in the individual standings.

Sophomore Michael Baskovich rounded out the team score with an 80 on Tuesday.

Middle Tennessee State University leads the 12-team field by three strokes after shooting a 586 team score over the first two days. The University of New Orleans is in second place (589) and the University of South Alabama is still within striking distance at 590.


 

 

FAU will conclude action in the Sun Belt Conference Championships during Wednesday’s final round, which is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m.
