Nashville, TN -Tuesday was much kinder to the Florida Atlantic University men's golf team at the Belmont Invitational, as the Owls shot the second-best score of the day, a 288 which moved them into a 13th place finish. The round was an encouraging development for head coach Johnny Orsino, who will be taking his team back to the same course, the Legends Club in Franklin, TN, for the Atlantic Sun Championship.
"We had a very good round today," Orsino said. "We're very excited about it, especially since this is the course the guys will be playing in conference, so it's important that they were able to get some confidence on it today."
Junior Kevin Clark and freshman Joong Jo shot matching 71's to lead the team, though the other three golfers, Tommy Suri (72), Marco Morales (74), and Michael Berger (76) didn't finish far behind. For the tournament, Clark was the highest finisher among individuals with a 47th place tie while Suri was the next best with a 54th place tie.
The Missouri Tigers shot a Belmont record-low 265 in the first round to build a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Tigers Chris Mabry (199) and Shawn Jasper (203) finished 1-2 among individuals.
The Owls have completed regular season play and will finish their season on April 18-20 at the A-Sun Championship.
