Florida Atlantic University's men's golf team trails leader Methodist College by only two strokes after the first day of the Big Red Classic hosted by Austin Peay State University. Torstein Nevestad holds a two-stroke lead individually while teammate Ben Gardner is hot on his trail in second place, marking the first time this season that two FAU players have started a tournament in first and second place.
Nevestad shot a first round 72 before firing a tournament-low second-round score of 69, finishing three-under par on the 6,625 yard, par-72 course. Gardner, a freshman out of Spanish River High School in Boca Raton, started the first round in second place with a one-under 71. He finished even par in the second round and trails Nevestad by only two-strokes. Michael Cleary is 15th after two rounds after shooting 76 in the opening round and firing even par in the second round. Anibal Ochoa and Tommy Suri shot two-round scores of 158 and 167, respectively.
Florida Atlantic opened the tournament in fourth place with a team round of 296. But the Owls clawed their way back in the second round, tying the tournament low with a second round score of 290 to finish second out of 15 schools. George Mason University (589), host Austin Peay State (590) and Bowling Green State University (596) round out the top five. FAU is the lone representative of the Atlantic Sun.
