HOUSTON, Texas- The Florida Atlantic University men’s golf team concluded their first spring tournament today with Airik Medinis recording the Owls’ top finish at the 14th-annual Rice Intercollegiate at Westwood Golf Club.
Medinis carded 150 in the first two rounds on day one going into the final round tied for 23rd-place. He shot his season low of 71 in the second round. Medinis went on to shoot 78 in the third round to finish the tournament 12-over 228, tying for 33rd. Derron Peyton followed, improving his 45th-place tie on the first day with a final round of 76 to tie for 41st.
Connor O’Rourke held onto his 45th-place tie from Monday’s play, carding a final round of 77 to finish with 231 strokes overall. O’Rourke led the Owls in birdies, collecting five over the three rounds of play. Teammate Caleb Sibley tied with O’Rourke recording rounds of 75, 76 and 80. Senior Alex Gates rounded out FAU’s finishers for the tournament. Gates tied for 50th-place with a final round of 79 to bring his tournament total to 232.
FAU finished 11th overall with rounds of 303, 297 and 310 for a total of 910 for the tournament. The Owls fell to UTSA’s team who took first-place scoring 875. The men’s golf team will compete next at Virginia Commonwealth for a three-day tournament schedule to begin on Monday, March 3.
