HOUSTON, Texas- The Florida Atlantic University men’s golf team opened its spring 2014 schedule Monday at the 14th-annual Rice Intercollegiate at Westwood Golf Club. The fifteen team tournament includes Arkansas State, Cincinnati, Drake, Gonzaga, Houston Baptist, Lipscomb, McNeese State, Nicholls State, Old Dominion, Rice University, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin State, UT-Pan American and UTSA.
The Owls finished the first day in seventh-place with rounds of 303 and 297 for a total of 24-over 600.
Airik Medinis recorded FAU’s top finish for the day, carding 150 strokes in the first two rounds to tie for 23rd-place. Medinis shot 79 in the first round and a season low of 71 in the second. Caleb Sibley followed Medinis with 151 strokes on the day to tie for 26th-place. Sibley shot 75 in the first round for his lowest round this season.
Team captain Alex Gates shot 77 in the opening round and 76 in the second round for a total of 153, tying for 39th. Connor O’Rourke and Derron Payton rounded out FAU’s team tying for 45th-place. O’Rourke shot rounds of 72 and 82 while Peyton shot 80 and 74. The Owls will complete the final round of the Rice Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
