BOCA RATON, Fla. - Lane Kiffin, Florida Atlantic University’s newly-hired head football coach, has been named FootballScoop’s 2016 Offensive Coordinator of the Year.
The award, presented by ProGrass and selected by previous honorees, was presented to Kiffin for his efforts in Alabama’s quest for back-to-back National Championships. Those efforts included replacing the 2015 Heisman Trophy winner’s offensive production and building an offense that has been led by a freshman quarterback.
Alabama’s offense didn’t take a step back they jumped 17 spots in scoring offense, from No. 30 nationally to No. 13, and from No. 49 to No. 18 in yards per play.
In the three seasons that Kiffin has served as offensive coordinator, the Tide have won three SEC titles, have been a part of three playoff runs, and have used three different starting quarterbacks.
While the Alabama offense has flourished through three different quarterbacks, each with a different skillset, the Tide ground attack has been just as strong. This season, freshman Jalen Hurts completed 220-of-337 passes (65.3 percent) for 2,592 yards and 22 scores to only nine interceptions. He also was second on the squad with 841 rushing yards and a dozen TDs. The ground attack was led by Damien Harris, who ranked No. 14 nationally in rushing with 3,185 yards and No. 8 in yards per carry (5.7) while adding 28 touchdowns. The 2016 Alabama squad ranked in the top 10 nationally for rushes of 10-plus, 20-plus and 30-plus yards.
Kiffin is scheduled to join the Owls at the conclusion of Alabama’s championship run. Deposits for 2017 FAU football season tickets are being accepted by calling 1-866-FAU-Owls or online at https://oss.ticketmaster.com/aps/fau/EN/buy/browse?i%5B0%5D=253.
