BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University football has accept-ed an invitation to play in the 2017 Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl, taking on the Ak-ron Zips. The bowl will be the final game for the 2017 team, a team that has rewritten the FAU record books and brought the University along for the ride.
“On behalf of Florida Atlantic University, we are so excited to be a part of this game…to be chosen for this bowl, (and to) have a chance to play in our home stadium, which our players have just started to protect,” said Lane Kiffin, FAU’s head football coach. “When we became bowl eligible everyone was excited about that, but we had a lot higher aspirations and goals than going to just any bowl. So, to go to a premier bowl like this is exciting for our program.”
FAU is 10-3 on the season and was a perfect 8-0 in Conference USA play. On Saturday, the Owls clinched the team’s first C-USA Championship with a 41-17 victory. The conference title is the second in program history and the first captured through a championship game format.
The Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl is the third bowl for the Owls in their 17-year history. FAU played in the New Orleans Bowl in 2007 in the first year eligible to participate in an FBS bowl, and in the Motor City Bowl in 2008.
The contest is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. at FAU Stadium. It will be the first matchup for FAU and Akron and will be the first appearance in the Boca Raton Bowl for both teams.
