BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University football team saw two of its members recognized as part of the Conference USA All-Academic Team, presented by InTouch Credit Union and announced by the league on Friday.
The 13-member squad includes Owls’ redshirt junior quarterback Jason Driskel and graduate student placekicker Greg Joseph. FAU was only one of two schools, with Middle Tennessee being the other, to place multiple members on the team.
Joseph earned his undergraduate degree in exercise science and health promotion, and is pursuing his MBA in health administration, while posting a 3.595 GPA. A semifinalist for the Lou Groza Collegiate Place Kicker Award, he is 13-of-16 on field goals and 54-of-58 on extra points this year, while setting the all-time school record for the longest field goal, a 54-yarder versus Navy. He also serves as the team’s kickoff specialist, where he has booted 85 kicks, of which 65 have been touchbacks (76 percent). The Boca Raton native is the program’s all-time leader in PATs (155), PATs attempted (160), field goals (55), field goals attempted (77), and total points (320).
Driskel, a two-time member of the Commissioner’s Honor Roll, holds a 3.336 GPA in civil engineering. He has quarterbacked the Eastern Division Champion Owls to all eight of their league wins, and an 8-1 record overall as the team’s starter. Included in that run was engineering the Owls to a program and Conference USA-record 804 yards of offense versus North Texas, earning him C-USA Offensive Player of the Week honors, and he tied the school’s record of four rushing touchdowns in a game in the win over Old Dominion. On the year, the native of Oviedo, Florida, has completed 66.8 percent of his passes, the top mark in C-USA and seventh in all of FBS, and has thrown 12 touchdowns to just four interceptions. His passing efficiency of 144.3 is second in the conference, and in league games only, that number rises to 153.5, first among all C-USA quarterbacks.
Next up for Driskel, Joseph and the Owls is North Texas in the 2017 Dynacraft Conference USA Championship, hosted by the team at FAU Stadium on Saturday. Kickoff is at noon, and tickets are available by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
