FAU's Whitehead and Kovacs Earn Student-Athlete of the Week Honors

Nov. 26, 2013

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University’s football wide receiver Lucky Whitehead and Anett Kovacs of swimming and diving have earned FAU’s student-athlete of the week honors for their performances over the weekend.

FAU fans were introduced to a healthy Whitehead, who had been hampered by a collar bone injury since before the 2013 spring season, as he was given the ball twice and tallied 23 yards on the ground. For the day, he had a season long 26-yard carry which resulted in the Owls’ first score of the game. In the second quarter, the junior would score his second touchdown, notching his first multiple-scoring game with the Owls. Whitehead’s second score was a 64-yard reception. It was the longest reception of Whitehead’s career and also the longest pass for Jaquez Johnson. On the day, Whitehead had 87 all-purpose yards and set the tone for the Owls who would put together a 55-10 victory and improve to 5-6 on the season.

Kovacs, a junior, led the Owls as the top-finisher at the three-day Georgia Tech Invitational that began on Nov. 22. Kovacs competed in the 500-yard freestyle on the first day of competition and qualified for finals with a fourth-place finish (4:53.66) in the preliminaries. She trimmed more than a second off of her time to clinch third-place with a final time of 4:52.34. On Nov. 23, she set a new personal record in the 100-yard fly finishing in 56.47 for eighth-place. Kovacs’ previous best finish, 56.60, was set during her freshman season. Determined to finish the invitational with top honors, the native of Budapest, Hungary hit the pad nearly two-seconds ahead of the second finisher to claim victory in the 200-yard butterfly. Kovacs posted an NCAA B-cut time and set a new personal record for the event, finishing in 1:58.71.

FAU’s football team will conclude the regular season hosting in-state rival FIU as the Owls fight for one more win to end the season bowl-eligible. Kickoff on Friday, Nov. 29 is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. Swimming and diving return home to prepare for their home opener against Georgia Tech and Denver on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 1 p.m.
