BOCA RATON, Fla. - Standout performances over the weekend by football’s Christian Milstead and women’s basketball’s Latavia Dempsey led both teams to blowout victories earning the pair Florida Atlantic University's honor of student-athlete of the week.
Milstead played the corner position in the Owls 41-7 win against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. The senior proved his ability in shutting down the passing game by collecting two interceptions on Saturday. His first was at the FAU six-yard line as he held USM from capitalizing on one of its few scoring opportunities. Milstead then grabbed his second of the game just before the half and returned it 61 yards earning his first career pick-six and improving FAU’s lead to 27-0.
The Owls return home for their final two games of the regular season facing New Mexico State on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 3:05 p.m. and FIU on Friday, Nov. 29. at 3 p.m. FAU looks to defeat both opponents to finish the season 6-6 and bowl eligible for the first time since 2008. Live coverage for the New Mexico State game will be provided by ESPN 106.3 while Fox Sports and ESPN 106.3 will both cover the FIU game.
Dempsey reached double-digit scoring on Saturday as she led the Owls to a record-setting defeat over Florida Memorial, 120-43. The Owls beat the previous school record for the largest margin of victory set in 1989 by 2 points, finishing with a 77 point lead. The senior drained eight of her 12 shots, including three three-pointers, tallying a game-high 21 points. In her 22 minutes on the court, Dempsey recorded three steals and one assist.
Women’s basketball returns to the road to play Western Illinois on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 8 p.m. followed by Cleveland State on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. Live coverage is available for both games at www.fausports.com
