BOCA RATON, FL -
Florida Atlantic took part in its final intrasquad scrimmage of the season Saturday at the Tom Oxley Practice Field as the defense won decisively, 16-6. Thomas Parker scored the only touchdown for the offense as the defense turned in its strongest performance of the fall. FAU played nine such scrimmages as the program's first season before intercollegiate play came to a close. In all, the offense won the season series, 5-4.
"We had a great season," said head coach Howard Schnellenberger. "We had nine great scrimmages. The kids really played hard and with a lot of effort. Today was not the best performance by our offensive football team. We can look at the fact we had three running backs out and tight ends playing fullback, but we can never use that as an excuse."
Parker finished the season on a strong note with four touchdown receptions in the final three contests to go along with 320 yards receiving. Parker led FAU in receiving for the fall with 496 yards and five touchdowns.
On the ground, Dekolan James ended up leading the Owls with a total of 542 yards on the ground for the fall. James also led FAU with seven touchdowns.
Garrett Jahn led Owls' quarterbacks with 838 yards, 51 completions, and five touchdowns for the fall.
Overall, FAU's offense scored 33 touchdowns in the nine scrimmages, with 17 coming through the air and 16 on the ground.
"Looking at it more objectively over a long period of time, this was a wonderful first practice season for this football team," said Schnellenberger. "It's one that we can build on and go from. I'm particularly pleased with the defense. Though we don't have a lot of scholarship players over there, they improved and gave the offense a lot of work."
FAU begins intercollegiate play in 2001 and will play its home games at Pro Player Stadium in
Miami. The Owls' will host Slippery Rock September 1, 2001 in FAU's first game. The complete
2001 schedule will be released at a later date.
