BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University running back “Motor” Devin Singletary and safety Jalen Young have been named Conference USA Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, as announced by the league.
Singletary recorded his seventh game this season with 100-plus yards, and second-consecutive game with 200-plus rushing yards (203). He also had a rushing and a receiving touchdown against Marshall. Singletary’s highlight tape included his first touchdown reception with a 60 yard catch from wide receiver Kamrin Solomon and tying his career long rush with a 66 yard run late in the first half. Young tied a FAU record with three interceptions on the night and added four tackles to his performance.
With his latest performance, the sophomore from Deerfield Beach continues to lead the nation in rushing TDs (19) and total TDs (20), ranking No. 5 in rushing yards (1,256), No. 5 in all-purpose yards (159.89), No. 6 in rushing yards per game (139.6), and No. 14 in rush yards per carry (6.72), all of which lead C-USA.
With his record performance, Young launched himself to No. 2 nationally in interceptions (5) and No. 3 in interceptions per game (0.6), both of which lead C-USA. Young’s efforts lead an Owls defense that leads the nation in interceptions with 18.
Singletary helped the Owls march down the field to score on their opening drive with 53 rushing yards on eight carries. On the ensuing drive, Young picked off his first pass of the night, returning it to the Marshall 19, setting-up a score on the following play to put FAU up 13-0 in the first quarter. Over the quarter, Singletary and Young continued to grind out yards and tackles, until both took over in the final two periods.
The Owls used a trio of trick plays to take the lead in the third quarter culminating in Singletary’s first TD reception of his career, a 60 catch from wide receiver Kamrin Solomon off of a double pass from quarterback Jason Driskel. Young got his second interception of the game on Marshall’s first play of the fourth quarter, which set up Singletary’s lone rushing TD for 13 yards to put the Owls up 30-16. Young helped seal the game with an interception on Marshall’s final drive.
The C-USA honor is the third time Singletary has been recognized this season. He earned Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors following his Middle Tennessee performance of 133 yards and four touchdowns and Offensive Player of the Week for his 244 yard four touchdown game against WKU. Young’s record day also earned him CollegeSportMadness.com C-USA Defensive Player of the Week.
Next up for Singletary, Young, and the Owls is another Conference USA matchup on the road at Louisiana Tech, this Saturday at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast on STADIUM and ESPN West Palm 106.3.
