BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University redshirt junior quarterback Jason Driskel has been named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Driskel led the Owls in battle against North Texas last Saturday at FAU Stadium with both teams heading into the matchup unblemished in conference play. Driskel and the offense went to work and amassed 804 yards, a C-USA record and just 11 yards short of the most yards by a FBS team this season.
On the night, Driskel had his best passing performance of the season, going 24-for-35 for 357 yards and no interceptions. His longest pass of the night was a 69-yard scoring strike to freshman Willie Wright to put the Owls up 24-0 with 1:26 left to play in the first quarter.
In the Owls’ last outing, Driskel carried the ball into the end zone four times. On Saturday, he had four total carries for 68 yards, including a one-yard scoring run. His longest rush of the night was 33 yards. His total yardage for the night was 425 yards, five yards more than the Mean Green as a team. Seven different receivers caught a pass from Driskel and five of those players had at least one play of 17 yards or more.
Driskel and the Owls scored on 9-of-9 drives, with backups Daniel Parr and John Franklin III taking over the final two scoring drives. FAU’s longest scoring drive was just 4:22 and the offense averaged 17.6 seconds per play, showing Driskel’s ability to guide the up-tempo offense. The Owls’ punting unit had a night off thanks to Driskel and the offense. The Owls did not punt in the game.
Driskel is also up for Manning Award Quarterback of the Week. The Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, named eight quarterbacks as “Stars of the Week” and one of those QB’s will earn the weekly honor. The award is voted on by fans and voting closes on Thursday at noon (EST). Fans can go here to vote.
