The Florida Atlantic University football team got a taste of what Saturday’s inaugural game will be like when it practiced inside the new on-campus stadium for the first time on Tuesday.
The Owls first game will be against Western Kentucky University on Saturday, October 15, beginning at 4 p.m. Tuesday’s practice began at 4 p.m. prior to the athletic department’s “Select-A-Seat” ticket event.
“It was a delight to see a lot of people show up at the stadium to get a sneak preview of a game,” said Howard Schnellenberger, FAU’s head football coach. “Getting out on the field today showcased the progress we have made in the first 10 years of the program. The players were excited to practice inside the stadium today.”
Players also reflected on going through the first practice inside the new stadium. “It is good to see all of the Blue and Red in the stadium,” said Xavier Stinson, redshirt junior fullback. “It’s a dream come true. It is bigger than words. The stadium is not just for our team but for the past FAU teams, the students and all of FAU.”
Redshirt junior quarterback David Kooi worked with the No. 1 unit after leading the Owls to two fourth quarter scoring drives. Redshirt running back Willie Floyd has some long runs against scouting team work.
FAU began the practice with individual drill work before going seven-on-seven drills.
The open-air stadium, a $70 million project, has 30,000 seats and features 6,000 premium seats, including 24 suites, 26 loge boxes, 1,000 premier club seats and 4,000 priority club seats, and the latest, state-of-the-art amenities.
