BOCA RATON, FL -
Three Individuals from Florida Atlantic University will be honored by the All-American football foundation at the Banquet of Champions XXV, Thursday, June 8, at the Downtown Hyatt Regency Hotel in Tampa, FL
FAU President Dr. Anthony J. Catanese will be honored as the Outstanding College President for his efforts in laying the groundwork for a division I football program and his hiring of Howard Schnellenberger.
Schnellenberger will receive the Foundation's Johnny Vaught Outstanding Head Coach Award along with John McKay, former head coach at Southern California and hall of Fame member.
"I'm flattered and honored," said Schnellenberger. "To be included among so many great names in football says a lot about what Florida Atlantic Football has been able to accomplish."
In addition, Bob Vanatta, FAU's associate director of athletics, will receive the Bud Dudley Bowl Executive Award for his work with the Independence, Hall of Fame, and Blockbuster Bowls.
FAU will begin intercollegiate play as a Division I-AA football team in the Fall of 2001. The program already signed its first recruiting class in February. Because of the fund raising efforts of Schnellenberger, a new state-of-the-art athletics complex will be completed by the Fall of 2000 at FAU's main campus in Boca Raton.
