BOCA RATON, Fla. - Devin Singletary (“Motor”), a Florida Atlantic University sophomore running back, has been named the Conference USA Co-Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by C-USA today.
For the third consecutive game, Singletary broke the 100-yard plateau with 133 yards on 24 carries in the Owls’ 38-21 victory over Middle Tennessee Saturday. The sophomore averages 6.2 yards per carry on the season, but more impressively he became just the third Owl, in the program’s history, to score four rushing touchdowns in a game. His previous mark was three which he first set versus Middle Tennessee in 2016. He has repeated that mark twice in 2017.
On Saturday, Singletary capped off the game-opening drive with a 19-yard tightrope run down the FAU sideline, alluding more than three would-be tacklers for the score. The play earned him a No. 4 spot on the evening’s top 10 plays. On a seven-play, 75-yard drive, he had carries of three, six, seven, five, and the 19-yard score. He then put the Owls up 14-3 with three carries of 10, six and the final 13 in FAU’s third drive with 2:53 remaining in the first.
The first drive of the second quarter was more of the same, which included three carries and the closing one-yard score to put FAU up 24-6. The sophomore would end the first half with 91 yards on 15 carries. The Owls used two more backs throughout the game and Singletary had just nine carries for 42 yards in the second half, but that included his fourth score of the game, a two-yard run.
After last Saturday’s game, Singletary now has nine touchdowns on the year, just three shy of tying his first collegiate campaign. He also is just four scores shy of the program’s single-season mark of 13 set by teammate Gregory Howell, Jr. in 2016. FAU’s all-time career rushing touchdown record is 27, held by Alfred Morris (2007-11), who currently plays for the Dallas Cowboys.
Singletary is currently ranked No. 2 nationally with nine rushing TDs, No. 5 in total points scored and No. 3 in total touchdowns.
Teammate Jalen Young also represented the Owls as a C-USA Player of the Week. Young was bestowed the honor by CollegeSportsMadness.com. Young tallied eight tackles, one interception and a punt return of 21 yards versus Middle Tennessee.
The duo will lead the Owls this weekend when they travel to Norfolk, Virginia, where they will face Old Dominion. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. and the game will air on the Stadium network.
