BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University’s D’Joun Smith of football and Alessia Pizzoccheri of volleyball have earned FAU’s student-athlete of the week honors after notable performances over the weekend.
D’Joun Smith tallied three tackles, all solo, as well as an interception for a 20-yard return and three pass break-ups as the FAU Owls battled the Rice Owls in Houston, Texas on Sept. 28 for the first time in the program’s history. It was Smith’s third consecutive game with an interception and his nine break-ups rank the Florida native among the nation’s leaders in both interceptions and defended. Rice came back to take the win in the fourth-quarter, 18-14.
FAU will next travel to Birmingham, Ala. where the Owls will face UAB. It will be the fifth meeting between the two schools with FAU holding the series at 3-1. It will be the first meeting between the two as Conference USA members.
Alessia Pizzoccheri had her fifth double-double of the season in a five-set match against Marshall on Sept. 27. In that match, she recorded 16 digs and 15 kills. She followed that up with her best all-around performance of the season on Sept. 29. In a four-set win over Charlotte, Pizzoccheri had a match-high 19 kills to go with eight digs, five service aces and two block assists. The Owls fell to Marshall after five sets but were able to beat Charlotte in four sets for their first Conference USA win.
