FAU Quarterback Rusty Smith
Sept. 23, 2007
Boca Raton, FL -
Dear Owl Fans,
I'm writing to you on Friday as we board the bus for North Texas. By the time you receive this, we hope to have brought home another victory for Florida Atlantic. Last week was a special week for our football program and especially for the University. First, we defeated Minnesota and became the first Sun Belt team to defeat a Big 10 team. On Sunday, my teammate Tavious Polo received the national award for Defensive Player of the Week from the Walter Camp Foundation.
Monday began a big week for me, as I was on the ballot for USA Today's Offensive Player of the Week. At the outset it looked like a long shot, because I would need more votes than players at storied football powerhouses. Thanks to you, our fans, the honor was brought home to our University. Just minutes later, the Board of Trustees approved the FAU on-campus stadium proposal. Coach uses the terms "extraordinary effort" and "advanced training games" to describe the extra push that's required to win. You, the fans, showed that effort, and the award belongs not only to me, the offensive line and the defense for holding onto the game, it also belongs to you.
So thank you, and to all who passed along the link to their friends for voting, please send them my gratitude.
