BOCA RATON, FL - While the rain was pouring down on south Florida Friday afternoon, four Florida Atlantic University football players received the words they have dreamt of hearing for a lifetime. You are on a collegiate football scholarship.
Head football coach Charlie Partridge first met with long snapper Joe Fischer and gave him the word that he would be played on scholarship. He then went downstairs to the position meeting where he announced that all defensive players needed to meet in the team room, with a face that signified trouble. Once gathered he asked defensivebacks Sharrod Neasman and Grant Helm to stand.
He then asked if they had anything to say to the team or anything he should know. They each said no with fear and confusion in their hearts.
Partridge then announced that he was placing the duo on scholarship, as a sign of his appreciation for their dedication to FAU and FAU football.
The room erupted with congratulations and high fives for the teammates who have worked for years for the opportunity to be on a Division I scholarship.
Could the first-year FAU coach then orchestrated the same scenario again? He did. He gathered the offense and moved through the same paces with junior tight end Michael Harrop, who was met with the same celebration.
Three separate announcements, three celebrations, four-veteran FAU players join the scholarship ranks. FAU classes will begin on Monday.
