Coach Following Practice

Florida Atlantic University’s football team officially began the 2013 football season with its first official practice, Saturday morning.

While the day was the first official practice of the new season, it was the second season opening practice under the direction of second-year Head Coach Carl Pelini and it was light years different from just one year ago.

“I liked the effort,” said Pelini. “Conditioning wise– there is no comparison in terms of the physical preparation (between 2012 and 2013). I expect a big jump in the second practice. We are a much faster team than we were a year ago.”

The players moved from drill to drill without the constant reminder to pick up the pace. The instruction was on perfecting technique instead of teaching it and it was up to the older guys to teach the younger players the expectations The squad also moved through four rotations of 7-on-7 and was able to begin work on team drills with much more easy and familiarity with somewhat of a two-deep in place where every single position was up for grabs one year ago.

One area that would be of fan interest during preseason camp is the progression of the offensive line. Following practice senior Mustafa Johnson, the lone returning regular starting offensive lineman, proved his football maturity by addressing questions much like a seasoned coach.

“Today was day one,” said Johnson. When pressed how the offensive line looked he said “Like day one and tomorrow we will look like day two. You have to have the mindset that each time you come out here you are going to improve. We will take it one day at a time.”
