D'Joun Smith ranked 2nd nationally in interceptions in 2013

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University's football team, which enters its second season as a Conference USA member, placed two Owls on the preseason all-conference team. Seniors Andrae Kirk and D'Joun Smith were named to the defensive team, as announced by the league office today.
Kirk, a second team C-USA 2013 post-season selection, tallied a team leading 84 tackles and had input in nearly every defensive statistical category. The 2013 Owl Defensive MVP had three games with double-digit tackles (Middle Tennessee, Auburn and Tulane). Earlier this week, Kirk was named to the Lombardi Watch List along with teammates Braden Lyons and Brandin Bryant.
Smith was a 2013 C-USA first team member after posting seven interceptions which ranked Smith No. 2 nationally. He also ended his junior campaign No. 3 in pass break-ups. Smith was named to the Jim Thorpe Award watch list earlier this month.
The duo were a part of an FAU defense that finished 2013 season ranked No. 11 nationally in total defense. Both joined the Owls in 2011 as true freshmen and were members of the first team to play in FAU's on-campus stadium. Since that time, FAU has improved its record from a team that won just one game to a team that was bowl eligible in 2013 and ended on a four-game win streak.
FAU Stadium will be the home for the inaugural 2014 Boca Bowl game on Tuesday, Dec. 23 and will use the 2014 season to play for the opportunity to host the 10th annual Conference USA Football Championship on Saturday, Dec. 6, pitting the champions of the East and West divisions.
