BOCA RATON, Fla. - Eight members of Florida Atlantic University's football team have garnered preseason all-conference recognition in Phil Steele's Magazine.
The Owls, who ended 2013 ranked No. 11 nationally in defense, placed two members on first-team defense. Seniors Andrae Kirk, a three-year starter at linebacker, and D'Joun Smith, also a three-year starter, received top accolades at their positions. Smith ended his junior campaign among the nation's top three in both passes broken up and interceptions. Junior defensive linemen Brandin Bryant and Trevon Coley will return to anchor a defensive line that recorded a program single-season high 32 sacks. Bryant, who was named to the second team, accounted for six sacks while third team member Coley added 2.5 sacks and was a third team member. Senior defensive back Christian Milsteadalso garnered third team honors after a strong junior campaign that saw him play four different positions.
Offensively, senior wide receiver William Dukes earned second-team honors. Dukes has led all FAU receivers in yards the last two seasons. 2013 Conference USA Newcomer of the Year Jaquez Johnson earned third-team honors. Johnson transferred to FAU in 2013, battled for the starting spot and ended his sophomore campaign leading the Owls in both passing and rushing. FAU set a single-season rushing record in 2013 and did so behind the efforts of a new offensive line. The Owls will look improve upon its ground attack with a more experienced line led by senior Braden Lyons, who will move from right tackle to centerand was listed on the fourth team. Lyons also has earned a spot on the Remington Trophy Spring Watch List.
The Owls will open their 2014 campaign under the direction of FAU Head Football Coach Charlie Partridge on Saturday, Aug. 30 against Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb. FAU's home schedule will kick-off on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. versus Tulsa. Season tickets are on sale and can be purchased by calling 1-866-FAU-Owls.
