BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University football team completed the 2013 spring season with Spring Fest and its Spring Game, which the defense won 32-31.
The day began with an opportunity for area youth, 12 and under, to participate in selected competitions on the field.
The game kicked off at 2 p.m. with a format that pitted the offense against the defense, not only on the field but in also in bonus competitions. The offense was awarded points in the traditional manner but also received extra points for long plays. The defense received points by stopping the offense, turnovers and scores. Bonus points were awarded for the winners of the offensive linemen versus the defensive linemen in punt catching, the wide receivers and defensive backs in tug-of-war and finally the running backs faced off with the linebackers in a field goal kicking competition.
Offensively, Melvin German was 8-13 for 88 yards with two interceptions while Stephen Curtis was 8-10 for 47 yards and a four-yard scamper into the end zone. Newcomer Jaquez Johnson completed the trio of quarterbacks and was 5-7 for 33 yards. The ground attack was led by Jonathan Wallace who had 30 yards on 10 carries. German added another 27 yards on nine carries while Jeremy Gaskins led all rushers with 55 yards on eight carries. Senior Damian Fortner and junior Tony Moorerounded out the ball carriers with 11 and five yards on the ground, respectively.
In all, nine receivers were credited with a catch. Senior Daniel McKinney had four catches for 69 yards, including a catch that scored points for the offense based on its length. Wallace had two catches for a total of 16 yards while Robert Lohnes (3) and Marcus Cunningham (2) were the only other multiple reception receivers. DeAndre Richardson, who missed last season, made his return with a 23 yard catch.
Defensively, the Owls accumulated nine sacks while Cre'von Leblanc and Winfred Stricklandgathered points for the defense with interceptions.
At the half, FAU's all-time rushing record holder and current Washington Redskin Alfred Morriswas honored with a photo collage, presented by FAU President Mary Jane Saunders, and a key to the city by Deputy Mayor Susan Haynie.
The day ended with a meet and greet and autograph session with members of the FAU football team.
