DELRAY BEACH, FL - Members of the Florida Atlantic University football and track and field teams read to students at Banyan Creek Elementary School in Delray Beach as part of the 2nd & 7 literacy program.
The literacy program is sponsored by the 2nd & 7 Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides free books and positive role models for kids.
FAU’s football team was represented by Arthur Crouse, Anthony Hamilton, Grant Helm, Shalom Ogbonda, Ronnie Scott and Lucky Whitehead, while Clare Brinkman, Annie Cooper, Tara Cripe, Theresa Duncan, Nathaly Gallego, Stacy Paton and head coach Alex Smolka participated from track and field.
The student-athletes read to students at Banyan Creek followed by a discussion stressing the importance of reading, academic achievement and staying active through sports. Each student received a free book to practice reading on their own.
The 2nd and 7 Foundation was started by former Ohio State University football players Mike Vrabel, Luke Fickell and Ryan Miller. The purpose of the foundation is to promote literacy and provide positive role models to young children. FAU is one of eight schools that participate in the program nationwide.
