BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's football team meet on the gridiron for the first day of spring drills Wednesday. While the team began preparation in the meeting rooms Head Coach Howard Schnellenberger was the guest of FAU President Mary Jane Saunders and Athletics Director Craig Angelos at a meeting to present the stadium to the media.
Schnellenberger meet the team on the field where the Owls dedicated the first 20 minutes of practice towards individual drills. Both the offense and defense stayed with their position coaches to install the pass schemes. The following 30 minutes featured seven-on-seven while the linemen concentrated on skills. Installing the run broke up the drills and preceded 20 minutes of team drills. Special teams drills ended the day.
During seven-on-seven Graham Wilbert and David Kooi took most of the reps at the quarterback position, completing numerous passes to wide receiver Byron Hankerson who had one stand out catch from Kooi down the middle of the field between three defenders. Travis Jones and 2010 second team All-SBC Team running back Alfred Morris also shared the majority of the handoffs on offense.
FAU will be back on the field Friday at 3:30 p.m. for the final scheduled day of no pads. All practices are free and open to the public. Scrimmages are scheduled for April 9 and 16 with the spring game concluding the spring workouts on April 23. Scrimmage times are to be determined.
The Owls will open the 2011 campaign at the University of Florida, September 3, 2011. The Owls will run into their new on-campus stadium October 15, 2011.
