BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's football team returned Monday and wore full pads for the first time in 2013, allowing full contact.
With the donning of pads, the Owls submitted more team sessions into the practice itinerary. FAU also continues to install, causing the practices to have its ups when the plays are something the units are accustomed to and its downs when it is a new install or read.
"It's hard in the spring because you're always installing," said Carl Pelini, FAU's head football coach. "There are always parts of practice which are going to be rough, for example a new coverage went in today, and as a coach you have to remember to be patient. You have to think about what was called on that play, if it was new stuff you have to be a little more patient than the stuff we already have in."
Monday's practice had two big plays that drew cheers from the offense. The first was a Jaquez Johnson to Robert Lohnes pass for a 20-yard gain. During the final team session Johnson found William Dukes deep for a TD.
The Owls will return to the practice field 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 27. Practices are closed to the general public.
FAU will host the 2013 spring game at 2 p.m. April 20th, in the GEO Group Stadium.
Admission to the spring game will be free of charge. The athletic department also will host a "select a seat" at the 2013 Spring Game or tickets may be purchased by calling 1-866-FAU-Owls. The game will be carried live by ESPN 760AM and 106.3FM as well as on line at www.fausports.com. ESPN's Ken LaVicka will have the call.
