BOCA RATON, FL -
With the program's second recruiting class under its belt and the inaugural football game in less than 200 days, Howard Schnellenberger, Florida Atlantic University's Director of Football Operations and Head Coach, will step off the gridiron for three days to enjoy the second-annual "Weekend in Paradise".
The "Weekend in Paradise" concept began three years ago with a one day golf tournament. Last year, the event expanded to a weekend event, one which welcomed the social, the celebrity and the avid golfer or fisherman.
This year's event will hold with the same format. Celebrities such as Johnny Unitas, Roman Gabriel, Manny Fernandez, Bob Kuechenberg, John Bock, Chris Carter as well as many more will open the weekend with a Celebrity Party, hosted by the Boca Country Club. Tickets for the Celebrity Party and Auction are $125. The Celebrity Party is scheduled for March 29.
Celebrities will join with their respective foursome Friday morning for an early morning tee-time at the Mizner Country Club, an Arnold Palmer Signature Golf Course. Participants will again be dazzled by the talents of trick-golfer Buddy Demling and will conclude the day with a party and auction. The golf tournament is scheduled for March 30.
The golf tournament will be followed by a two-day fishing tournament which will be hosted by the Sail Fish Marina, in West Palm Beach. Last year's cash prize was $15,000. It has been increased to $21,500 this year. Also, guaranteed to be given away is a 200hp Mercury engine, valued at $11,000 and the opportunity to win a Chevy Suburban valued at $40,000 for catching the State Record Wahoo. The two-day fishing tournament is scheduled for March 31-April 1.
"The goal of this event is to raise $150,000 for the FAU football team," said Buddy Cash, the Event Director. "The `Weekend in Paradise' event is an opportunity to raise awareness about the upcoming inaugural season, raise money to help build a national championship caliber team and simply bring all those together, with a common bond of FAU football, for a weekend of fun."
