Feb. 1, 2006
Florida Atlantic University's football team ushered in the program's seventh National Signing Day with 20 young men expected to join the program in the Fall of 2006 and six who have earned a scholarship through practice and game performance, announced Howard Schnellenberger.
Question and answer with Howard Schnellenberger:
On the recruiting class as a whole:
First I want to congratulate Coach Van Valkenburgh for his leadership in putting this class together and the coaching staff. They worked hard and long. They probably worked harder and longer than they did before because we were going against some of the best teams in the country. This year we spent a lot of time dividing the numbers; how many we wanted on offense and how many we wanted on defense. After we rewarded six additional members of our varsity team with scholarships we had about 21 scholarships to give out. In this day and time you have to overbook a little bit. We wanted 13 on defense and 12 on offense. As you can see we haven't gotten to those numbers yet. We wanted a certain number of lineman, a certain number of linebackers and a certain number of secondary guys, more than we have in the past and I think we came pretty close to getting those kinds of numbers. If we can get this thing balanced where we can recruit about 18 kids a year then we can try to keep the numbers relatively equal. If you get to that point, then you have your recruiting where you really want it and you can focus on the guys you really want. By that time we will hopefully be a more beautiful suitor than we are at the present time so we attract the best kids.
We have done our homework and the kids that we are brining in are the kids that we want. Early in life when you are playing this building game you aren't concerned about the ones you don't get. You have to make sure the ones that you get are the ones that you want.
On Markee Drummer and Corddero Drummond:
Drummer has played linebacker and defensive end. He will probably play defense end for us in all probability. Drummond is a very mature built guy. He is 6'1", 190 pounds. He looks like he is 220 pounds. He is an explosive kid.
On Willie Floyd
He has got a lot of yards. He is a very good student and a solid kid. He looks a lot heavier than he is.
