BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University’s football team will begin the defense of its 2017 Conference USA crown when the Owls begin play Saturday, Sept.1 at Oklahoma. That game, as well as the complete FAU schedule, was announced by Conference USA on Tuesday.
“The level of expectation for our team has been set,” said Head Coach Lane Kiffin. “Our goal this offseason is to take what was accomplished in 2017 and build upon that standard. And, against one of the toughest schedules in the country.”
FAU is slated to play Oklahoma, which fell to Georgia in the Rose Bowl national semifinal game, along with a road game at UCF, which captured the American Conference and finished as the only undefeated team in FBS in 2017. In total, six 2018 opponents participated in bowl games this past season, and combined, the 12 teams posted an 86-55 cumulative record.
The Owls’ home schedule in the upcoming season will feature Air Force, Bethune-Cookman and four Conference USA opponents, and the C-USA slate will culminate with the league’s 14th annual Championship Game, pitting the champions of the East and West Divisions, is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 1.
The Owls, who finished 2017 with an 11-3 record and a total of 45 new records, will return Devin Singletary, who led the nation with 32 rushing touchdowns and a total of 33, including one receiving score. Singletary and the Owls finished 2017 averaging 40.6 points per game which led C-USA and was No. 8 nationally.
Defensively, Azeez Al-Shaair, who has led the Owls in total tackles each of his three season, is back, after leading C-USA and finishing No. 5 nationally in total tackles. He also became the Owls all-time leader in total tackles. The linebacker will anchor the Owls defense alongside fellow senior Jalen Young. Young returns as the nation’s No. 2 ballhawk with a total of seven interceptions. He led a defensive back corps that was No. 2 in FBS with a program-high 20 interceptions.
It is important to note that all games are subject to date changes and some dates are expected to move in the coming weeks in order accommodate national television. A schedule of televised games will be released at a later date. Along with television coverage, all FAU games, home and away, will be broadcasted live on ESPN West Palm 106.3.
