CHARLESTON, IL -- Florida Atlantic University was defeated 47-6, Saturday, by Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL. The Panthers entered the game ranked as high as no. 3 in Division I-AA. With the loss, FAU drops to 1-9 while EIU improves to 8-2.
EIU jumped out early on FAU as J.R. Taylor scored on a 50-yard touchdown run to stake the Panthers to a 7-0 lead 1:03 into the first quarter. Taylor scored again with 1:59 left in the quarter to give EIU a 14-0 lead. On the day, Taylor ran for 308 yards on 35 carries with four touchdowns.
Eastern Illinois put the game away in the second quarter with 27 points. That included three touchdown passes by Tony Romo and a one-yard run by Taylor.
Both teams went scoreless in the third before Taylor added his final touchdown run with 3:51 left in the game. FAU avoided the shutout when Garret Jahn ran in from one yard out with 10 second left in the game.
For the day, EIU outgained FAU 494 yards to 107. The Owls put the ball in the air just 12 times with Jahn and starter Jared Allen both going 2-for-6 with no interceptions.
The Owls conclude their season November 23 when they host Florida International at 3:00pm at Pro Player Stadium.
