FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - Jared Allen completed 14 of 18 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns to lead Florida Atlantic past Nicholls State 31-23 on Saturday.
Allen's second touchdown pass, a 20-yard strike to Anthony Crissinger-Hill, gave the Owls (5-2) a 28-3 lead with 1:07 left in the half.
Nicholls State (2-4) entered the game with the top rushing offense among all Division I-AA teams (390.4 yards per game) and was second in scoring offense (42.8 points per game). The Colonels did manage 272 yards on 50 carries, but hurt their chances with five lost fumbles and six turnovers overall.
Nicholls State quarterback Josh Son was taken off the field by stretcher in the fourth quarter after suffering an undisclosed injury, team officials said. Son was hospitalized for evaluation, but did have movement in his arms and legs.
Son's 25-yard scoring run in the third quarter brought his team within 28-16, but the Colonels never dug all the way out of the early hole.
Yale Vannoy had a 6-yard touchdown run with 16 seconds left in the first half for Nicholls State. He also threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Isiah Mitchell with 53 seconds left in the game for the Colonels, who got a game-high 112 rushing yards from senior Phillip Brock.
The win was Florida Atlantic's fourth straight.
