The Florida Atlantic Owls began Sun Belt Conference play on Saturday, falling to the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders, 31-17.
The Owls trailed 7-0 at the half, and cut it to 14-3 on a Vinny Zaccario field goal with 6:02 to go in the third quarter.
A fourth quarter drive of nine plays and 79 yards ended with a four-yard touchdown pass from Graham Wilbert to running back Damian Fortner, cutting the MTSU lead to 24-10 at the 11:10 mark.
After the Blue Raiders scored again, the Owls marched down the field and into the end zone with 5:12 to go. Wilbert went 4-5 through the air on the drive, culminating with an 8-yard hookup with Byron Hankerson, to make it 31-17. That proved to be the final margin.
Wilbert was 25-32 on the night, for a career-high 260 yards. He completed six passes to both William Dukes (60 yards) and Travis Jones (55), and Daniel McKinney had five catches for a team-high 75 yards. Fortner led the Owls on the ground with 42 yards on 13 carries.
The Owls are 1-1 on the season, 0-1 in SBC play. They next travel to Athens to take on the University of Georgia Bulldogs, a 7:30 kickoff on Saturday, September 15. Live audio and game stats can be found on FAUSports.com.
