FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - Barrett Wilkes threw for 381 yards and four touchdowns as Valdosta State defeated Florida Atlantic 45-17 on Saturday.
Valdosta State, which extended its regular-season winning streak to 29 games, lost in the NCAA Division II championship game last year; Florida Atlantic is a Division I-AA school.
Wilkes completed 35 of 49 passes in his third career start for Valdosta State (2-0). He threw scoring passes to four different receivers - Andre Zellner, Nekeyma Wright, Raymond Thomas and Bama Adams.
Jared Allen completed 16-of-22 passes for 225 yards and one touchdown for Florida Atlantic (1-1), which totaled 385 yards but allowed 447. Aaron Sanchez ran 4 yards in the fourth quarter for the Owls' other touchdown.
Three of Valdosta State's touchdowns were set up by Florida Atlantic fumbles, the first of which was returned 47 yards by Dee Williford for the game's first touchdown.
Allen hit Roosevelt Bynes with a 43-yard touchdown pass with 2:27 left in the second quarter, bringing the Owls within 21-10, but Valdosta State scored 17 unanswered points in the third quarter to pull away.
The game was delayed 54 minutes in the second quarter because of lightning.
