Tim Atkins joined the program in 2008 as a volunteer who logged countless hours in all areas but, primarily with the defense. Midway through the spring of 2009 he officially joined the staff as the 2009 graduate assistant for defense.

In 2008, Atkins served as the defensive quality control coach. In that role he assisted Kirk Hoza with the defensive backs as well as opponent film breakdown. Atkins also prepared the tendencies reports, drew play cards for practice, organized weekly cut-ups for defensive coaches and players as well as input self scout data for defensive coordinator Kirk Hoza.

Prior to FAU, Atkins served as a defensive assistant for the Miami Dolphins in 2007 and served as a staff assistant in 2006. In 2005 he served as Whittier College's Wide Receiver Coach/Video Coordinator and in 2004 he served as Whittier's Safeties Coach and Video Coordinator. Atkins gained the experience needed to teach football while serving as an assistant defensive back coach at Hamilton High School in Chandler, AZ, from 2001-03.

The Omaha, NE, native, received his undergraduate degree in kinesiology in 2001 from Arizona State University.
