BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University Men's Basketball Head Coach Rex Walters will open up his second season as head coach on the road, as the Owls travel to the University of Rhode Island as part of the Glenn Wilkes Classic.
"We are really excited about this season," said Walters. "There is no doubt in my mind that we are playing a very competitive schedule with some of the best teams in the nation."
The Owls face the Rams on November 9, before traveling to Boston, Massachusetts to face Boston College. FAU will then return to the Sunshine State for the completion of the Glenn Wilkes Classic, facing Stetson University, University of South Florida and Cleveland State University from November 16-18.
Walters returns to his alma mater on November 28, when Florida Atlantic faces Kansas University at Allen Fieldhouse. Walters starred for the Jayhawks as a junior and senior, helping KU to win two Big Eight titles and reached the 1993 Final Four.
"It will be a lot of fun for Coach Moore, Carderro Nwoji and me to go back to our home state and play at Kansas University," said Walters. "KU is one of the preseason favorites for the Big 12 Championship, as well as a potential Final Four team, and I look forward to returning to Allen Fieldhouse."
FAU opens its home slate on December 1 against McNeese State University, starting a three-game home stand that includes Florida Gulf Coast University (December 8) and University of North Florida (December 18).
The Owls start conference play with a road game against Arkansas State University on December 20 before traveling for a non-conference tilt against Monmouth University (December 23).
Following the holiday break, the Owls face University of Louisiana-Lafayette at the Cajun Dome before opening the home conference schedule against division rival South Alabama University on January 2.
Florida Atlantic faces the defending Sun Belt Conference Champion University of North Texas at FAU Arena on January 19. Other remaining home games include Troy University (January 12), University of Denver (January 23), University of New Orleans (January 30), Savannah State University (February 2), Sun Belt Tournament runner-up Arkansas State (February 9), Longwood University (February 11), Florida International University (February 20), Middle Tennessee State University (February 23) and Western Kentucky University (March 1) to close out the regular season.
University of South Alabama will host the Sun Belt Conference Tournament for the 2007-08 season. The opening round will once again be played at host sites, before the teams travel to play the remainder of the tournament March 8-11.
In its first season as a member of the Sun Belt Conference, the Owls advanced to the second round of the SBC Tournament, falling to Western Kentucky after defeating Florida International in an overtime thriller at FAU Arena in the first round.
The Owls posted back-to-back winning seasons after going 16-15 last year, the first time the program has accomplished that task since the transition to Division I. FAU posted three-consecutive winning seasons at the Division II level, starting with the 1989-90 season.
