BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team announced its 2009-10 season schedule. A game at the BankAtlantic Center against the University of Miami in the 2009 MetroPCS Orange Bowl Classic, road dates against the University of Maryland and the University of Georgia, along with 13 home games at the FAU Arena help round out the competitive schedule.
The upcoming season marks FAU's fourth year as a member of the Sun Belt Conference (SBC), and the program's second year under the leadership of head coach Mike Jarvis.
"What we are trying to do is put together a schedule that gives us the necessary competitiveness to beat the top teams in the Sun Belt," says Jarvis. "That means we have to play a balanced national schedule, continuing to play some of the top teams in the country."
FAU will make its first appearance in the MetroPCS Orange Bowl Classic when the Owls face the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday, December 19. The event also features the University of Florida and the University of Richmond, who play the second part of a doubleheader following FAU's meeting with UM.
Highlighting the Owls' home schedule at the FAU Arena, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus, is a rivalry game against Isiah Thomas and his Florida International University team on Saturday, January 30, 2010 and a late-season match-up with back-to-back league champions Western Kentucky University on Thursday, February 25, 2010.
"We have a heck of a schedule," says Jarvis. "Our nine home games within the Sun Belt are do-or-die for us, every one of them. We are also trying to set up a schedule that has a lot of consistency in it, pursuing quality home-and-home commitments from teams at the top of their conferences, like Hofstra and American. USF will be another great home game for us down the road."
FAU will open the season with an exhibition game against Lynn University on Tuesday, November 10, followed by its official season-opener on Friday, November 13 against Florida Tech.
The first of two early-season road trips follow the season-opener, sending the Owls to the New Orleans area to face Southeastern Louisiana University on Monday, November 16. FAU then will travel to the northeast to play at American University - the reigning Patriot League champions - on Saturday, November 21 and at Manhattan College on Monday, November 23.
The Owls will face in-state rival University of South Florida on Friday, November 27 in Tampa prior to a non-conference home date with the University at Albany on Monday, November 30. Challenging non-conference opponents await FAU in late-December. The University of Georgia is on the schedule for Wednesday, December 23 and the University of Maryland on Sunday, December 27.
Hofstra University will visit the FAU Arena on Tuesday, December 29, which precludes the bulk of the Owls' SBC schedule, including the SBC home-opener on Saturday, January 2, 2010 against the University of South Alabama.
The FAU athletic department is offering an "Early Bird" ticket special for individuals who purchase season tickets by Friday, September 4. The promotion, which goes on sale Friday, August 7, includes free admission to both games of the MetroPCS Orange Bowl Classic and a free season parking pass for all 13 home games at the FAU Arena. Additional specials include "All-U-Can-Eat" seats for season ticket holders who upgrade their seats for an additional $99. This voucher will be good for "All-U-Can-Eat" hot dogs, nachos, popcorn and soft drinks for the entire season.
