BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University men's basketball will take part in the 2012 EA Sports Maui Invitational. FAU will face the University of North Carolina (UNC) and Mississippi State University (MSU) in Opening Round games before traveling to Elon University for the regional games of the tournament.
The tournament is in its second year of an expanded format, and the Owls are one of four mainland teams that will take part in the event, in addition to the eight island teams who are bound for Hawaii. The island teams will continue with the traditional three-day tournament Championship Round played at the Lahaina Civic Center during the week of Thanksgiving. Butler University, the University of Illinois, Marquette University, MSU, UNC, the University of Texas, the University of Southern California and host Chaminade University make up the island teams.
"We are very excited to take part in the EA Sports Maui Invitational," said Mike Jarvis, FAU head men's basketball coach. "Our goal is to eventually be one of the teams that gets to make the trip to Hawaii, but being able to take part in the regional games of the tournament is certainly a step in the right direction."
Prior to the championship round, seven of the eight island teams (Chaminade University not included) will host mainland teams in opening round games beginning on Friday, November 9 through Tuesday, November 13. Colgate University, Coppin State University, Elon and FAU are the mainland teams. With the exception of Elon, all of the mainland teams will play two of the island teams. The Owls will play UNC on Sunday, November 11 and MSU on Tuesday, November 13.
The four mainland teams will travel to Alumni Gym to take part in the Regional Games on Saturday, November 17 and Sunday, November 18. On November 17, FAU will play Coppin State and Colgate will play host Elon. The following day the two losing teams will meet, followed by the two winning teams playing. Game times are still to be determined.
