Feb. 25, 2013
BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University took two incredible wins over the weekend as men's basketball hosted UALR and the softball team took on Towson, in their first game of their Strike Out Cancer Tournament. These wins would not have been possible without the standout performances of Greg Gantt and Samantha Messer, earning them FAU's student athletes of the week.
Senior guard Greg Gantt had another strong week, which has been the norm throughout his senior season. On Thursday he scored 18 points and four rebounds in an overtime loss to North Texas. In Saturday's 73-59 win over UALR, he had 26 points in the win. It was the 18th time this season he has had at least 20 points in a game. That effort tied him with Ronnie Murphy for 7th all-time in conference history with 1,937 points.
The Owls will play rival FIU in their last home game of the season on Saturday at 7 p.m. The team will then travel to Hot Springs, Arkansas for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on March 8 - 11.
Sophomore pitcher Samantha Messer threw a complete game two hitter in FAU's 13-0, five inning win over Towson on Friday. She also retired the final two batters of the game against North Florida. Messer is now 2-0 for the season and currently holds the lowest earned run average of the team's pitchers.
Florida Atlantic's softball team will host the FAU Classic this weekend with competitors including Harvard, Ball State, Eastern Michigan, Jacksonville, and Michigan State. The Owls will begin play on Friday at 4 p.m. taking on the Ball State Cardinals.
