BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team will return to the FAU Arena for its conference home opener, before heading to Miami to face rival Florida International.
The Owls (4-9, 0-2 Sun Belt) will be seeking its first conference win of the season, having lost to Arkansas State 79-77 and Louisiana-Lafayette 71-52. FAU opens its home Sun Belt schedule on Wednesday when they host South Alabama. The Jaguars lead the Eastern Division and have an explosive offense that averages 75.1 points a game. South Alabama features four players averaging more than 10 points a game and is led by senior guard Demetric Bennett, who is third is the Sun Belt at 20.3 points a game. The two teams split last year's two meetings. USA defeated FAU 101-76 in Mobile, while FAU won in Boca Raton 79-69 on February 21st. Carlos Monroe had 21 points and 15 rebounds in the victory. Derrick Simmons added a career-high 16 points.
Saturday, FAU travels to rival Florida International to face the Golden Panthers. The Golden Panthers (3-8, 0-2) are led by the frontcourt tandem of Russell Hicks (13.5 points, 5.7 rebounds) and Alex Galindo (12.9 points, 6.4 points). Florida International is looking to snap a five-game losing streak. The Golden Panthers are also to break a three-game losing skid to FAU, as the Owls swept all three meetings last season, including a 91-88 overtime win in Boca Raton in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
