LAFAYETTE, LA - The Florida Atlantic men's basketball team had yet another slow start and could never make up the deficit, falling to Louisiana-Lafayette 67-55 in its Sun Belt opener on Saturday.
The Owls (4-10, 0-1 Sun Belt) missed their first five field goal attempts and committed two turnovers in the game's first four minutes as ULL (7-8, 1-0) built a 14-0 lead. A Greg Gantt three-pointer kickstarted the Owls and they scored the next 10 points to cut the margin to four in just over two minutes.
The remainder of the first half followed a similar pattern, with the Ragin' Cajuns building a lead, then the Owls clawing back to within striking distance. Two Kore White free throws cut the lead to five with five seconds left in the half, but a J.J. Thomas tip-in sent ULL to the locker room with a 36-29 lead.
ULL led by 12 early in the second half, but a 6-0 FAU run cut the lead in half. However, a 15-6 Ragin' Cajun run put the game away. Greg Gantt scored 15 to lead the team, while Kore White added 10. Kelvin Penn came off the bench and scored six points to go along with his career high nine rebounds.
FAU opens 2012 at home against ULM on Thursday, January 5. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Live audio and live stats of the game will be available at www.fausports.com.
