JACKSONVILLE, AL - Florida Atlantic University erased an 11-point second half deficit to defeat Jacksonville State University 74-71 Wednesday in Jacksonville, AL. Raheim Brown led the Owls with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
FAU (5-4, 3-1 Atlantic Sun Conference) trailed 56-45 with 10:06 left in the game before mounting its game-clinching rally. The Owls completed their comeback at the 5:36 mark when Dary Dingle's jumper gave the team a 59-58 lead and concluded a 14-2 run in a span of 4:30. Dingle finished with 13 points. The teams traded points over the next two minutes before FAU pulled away for good on a driving lay-up by Earnest Crumbley with 1:48 left that gave the Owls a 66-64 lead. FAU would go up by as many as six before finally winning by three.
Both teams struggled in the first half to gain any kind of consistency as the Owls shot only 33 percent in the half and trailed 32-29 at the break. JSU's largest lead in the half came in the final minute when Poonie Richardson's jumper with 18 seconds left gave the Gamecocks a 32-27 advantage. The Owls closed the gap as Andre Garner converted on a turnaround jumper from 16 feet as the buzzer sounded.
FAU shot 61 percent in the second half to finish at 43 percent for the game. Jeff Cowans scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half. The Gamecocks held a 44-41 advantage on the boards.
JSU (2-5, 1-3 A-Sun) was led by Omar Barlett's 16 points. Poonie Richardson and Scott Watson each added 13.
Florida Atlantic will be off until December 27 when it hosts Drake at 7:00pm at FAU Gymnasium.
