BOCA RATON, FL - Senior forward Andre Mattison tied his career high with 10 points and was one of three Owls in double figures, but the Florida Atlantic men's basketball team lost to Stetson 69-68 on Tuesday night.
Both FAU (5-6) and Stetson (3-7) struggled in the early going on the offensive end, as neither team could find their rhythm. The Owls eventually seized control and built a double digit lead in the first half.
Stetson refused to give up and cut the Owls' lead to one twice in second half before taking the lead on a three-pointer with 4:50 left in the game. A Pablo Bertone layup on FAU's next trip down the court broke a drought of nearly four minutes and tied the game at 60.
After a Hatters layup, Greg Gantt put FAU up 63-62 with 2:23 on the clock, before Stetson responded with back to back scores to take a 66-63 lead. Another Bertone layup cut the lead to one and after an FAU foul, Stetson split a pair of free throws to take a 67-65 lead. Gantt hit a three pointer with a hand in his face to put FAU up by one with seven seconds left. Stetson quickly inbounded the ball and missed its first try at the game winner, but Chris Perez was able to sneak along the baseline and hit the putback to win the game at the buzzer.
Gantt (26) and Bertone (12) joined Mattison in double figures. FAU will travel to Bloomington on Friday to play #6 Indiana. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. eastern. The game will be televised on ESPN2 and live audio will be available at www.fausports.com.
