DELAND, FL - For the second meeting in a row with Stetson, a late basket proved fatal for the Florida Atlantic men's basketball team. Willie Green's layup with a second left was the difference in the Hatters' 64-62 win.
The Owls went through extended offensive droughts in each half. FAU (3-9) lead by six early in the first half, but did not convert a field goal for nearly nine minutes until Justin Raffington banked in a jumper to cut the Hatter lead to two with 4:26 on the clock. That bucket kickstarted a 12-3 Owl run that put FAU up 34-29 at the break.
D'Andre Johnson made a reverse layup to push FAU's lead to 55-48 with 7:49 remaining. However, it was the last Owl basket for nearly four minutes, allowing Stetson to tie the score at 57. Kelvin Penn's layup regained the advantage for the Owls, and Raffington split a pair of free throws, putting FAU up 60-57 with three minutes to go. The Hatters eventually regained the lead when Raffington had his second big putback jam of the night to tie the game at 62-62. Green's game winner came on the next possession, not giving FAU enough time to answer.
Pablo Bertone had a team-high 18 points, while Raffington added 10 points and eight rebounds. Johnson scored a career-high 13 points. The Owls return home to face Elon on Sunday at 1 p.m. Live video and live stats will be available on fausports.com. Live audio will be available on ESPN 106.3 FM.
