In their second home game of the season, the Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team defeated Florida Gulf Coast University 69-55.
The Owls harassed FGCU on the defensive end and forced the Eagles to take many of their shots under strong pressure. FAU's aggressive defense held FGCU to 21.4 percent shooting in the first half and the Owls took a 30-15 lead into the locker room. FGCU's leading scorer, Casey Wollheb was held scoreless in the first half. Carlos Monroe paced FAU with a dozen first half points.
FAU began the second half on a 13-5 run with Sean Alarcon scoring the last seven to make the score 43-20 in favor of the Owls. Alarcon's career-high 13 points helped FAU overcome the loss of Sanchez Hughley, who will be out of action 2-4 weeks with a leg injury. 55 points is the lowest amount the Owls have allowed all season.
Carlos Monroe led all scorers with 26 points. Wollheb ended up with 11 points for the Eagles.
FAU will take time off for exams before hosting the University of North Florida on Tuesday December 18 at 7 p.m. The game will be carried via GameTracker on fausports.com and live play-by-play will be available on WMEN-640AM. Sideline seats and season tickets are still available for both men's and women's basketball by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
