BOCA RATON - Pierre Tucker and Mike Bell scored 22 points each as Florida Atlantic University fought off a gritty Barry University, 76-73, Saturday evening. Barry's Clifford Smith scored a game-high 23 points leading the Buccaneers. With the win, the Owls even their record at 2-2 heading into Atlantic Sun Conference play. Barry drops to 3-2 on the year.
Barry led by as many as eight points in the first half, 31-23, with 4:37 remaining. That's when the Owls responded with a 13-3 run to take a 36-34 lead. Bell and Tucker combined for ten points during that stretch, each with five. The game was knotted at 41-41 at the half.
The Owls went on a 7-0 run late in the second half with the game tied to take a 72-65 lead. From there FAU managed to hold on for the win. "We were able to clamp down the last seven minutes of the game," head coach Sidney Green said. "We were able to get steals and knock down shots."
FAU forced Barry into 26 turnovers for the game. Both teams shot well from the floor with FAU nailing 50.9 percent of its shots and Barry connecting on 52 percent of its attempts.
For FAU, Earnest Crumbley joined Bell and Tucker in double digits with 14. The senior guard added five assists and four steals. For Tucker, the 22 points was a career-high.
Barry had a total of four players reach double figures. Nick Perez (22), Rodney Lewis (11) and Andy Evens (10) joined Clifford Smith.
The Owls open A-Sun play at Gardner-Webb on December 15.
