LYNCHBURG, VA - Florida Atlantic University (4-2) extended its winning streak to three with a 91-80 victory over Liberty University (1-6) Tuesday night in Lynchburg, VA. Raheim Brown led the Owls with 23 points while Earnest Crumbley had 18.
The first half saw both teams put together big runs as the Owls, trailing 11-10, went on a 10-0 spurt to take a 20-11 lead before the Flames countered with a 12-2 run to take a 23-22 lead. A 10-2 run by the Owls gave them a 32-25 lead before Liberty orchestrated yet another 12-2 run to take a 37-34 lead. FAU closed the half on an 11-2 run capped off by a Crumbley trey with one second left to lead 45-39 at the half. In all, Crumbley went 4-of-6 from beyond the arc in the first half and scored 14 points while Brown had 16 points in the half.
The second half saw FAU extend its lead to 74-57 with about 12 minutes to go before Liberty mounted one final run to get back into the game. With less than four minutes to play, the Flames completed a 19-6 run to trail by just four points. That was as close as Liberty would get as FAU outscored the Flames 11-4 the rest of the way.
"This is a win the kids really deserved," said FAU head coach Sidney Green. "While we have a long way to go, we dug down deep tonight to win. I see greatness in this team."
Jeff Cowans scored all of his 11 points in the second half and surpassed the 500-point mark for his career. Crumbley finished with a career-tying 5-of-7 from three-point range
Liberty was led by Chris Caldwell, who scored 21 points.
For the game, FAU was outshot 51 percent to 48 percent while being outrebounded 39-32. FAU managed to force Liberty into 25 turnovers.
The Owls next take on Virginia Commonwealth Saturday at 7:00pm in Boca Raton.
