BOCA RATON, FL - Raheim Brown had 23 points and 16 rebounds, both career-highs, as Florida Atlantic University (2-2, 1-0 Atlantic Sun Conference) defeated Stetson, 82-71, Thursday night in Boca Raton, FL. FAU's Jeff Cowans also had a double-double with 16 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
Stetson (2-2, 0-1 A-Sun) got off to a quick 7-0 start before the Owls responded with an 8- 1 run to tie the game at 8-8 with 15:34 left in the first half. A jumper by Cowans with 11:01 gave FAU a 17-15 lead, their first of the game. FAU would not trail the rest of the way as they ran off seven straight points on their way to a 44-28 halftime lead.
FAU built as much as a 17-point lead in the second half as the Hatters would get no closer than nine points behind. Brown, who set a career-high with 15 rebounds Monday at Miami, had 14 points and 12 boards in the second half alone. It's Brown's second consecutive double-double.
"That was a big-time effort," said FAU head coach Sidney Green of Brown's play. "If he can continue to put this team on his back, the sky's the limit for us and Raheim."
FAU shot a blistering 60 percent from the field in the second half while going 52 percent overall. They outrebounded the Hatters 47-29 despite committing 27 turnovers. Stetson turned the ball over 20 times. FAU held Stetson to 39 percent shooting, including 24 percent from beyond the arc.
Robert Williams also finished in double figures with 10 points, all in the first half. Anthony Slater scored eight points while dishing out nine assists. In addition to Brown's career-highs, he went 10-of-14 from the field and had two blocks.
"I am very proud of the way this team played tonight," added Green. "It was a total team
Derrick DeWitt led Stetson with 19 points while Ravii Givens added 12. Alexis McMillan also tossed in 10.
